Shotover Moonlight Mountain Marathon preview

The ninth year of the Shotover Moonlight Mountain Marathon and Trail Runs are on this weekend on Ben Lomond Station, Queenstown, New Zealand. The race is organised by station owners the Foster family to showcase New Zealand’s classic high country scenery, the areas rich gold mining history, and the landscapes that their Ultra Fine merino call home.

The 2020 event has attracted a record 650+ entries, with athletes coming from 17 countries entered across the 4 race distances. Australian’s continue to be the largest international field with approx 25% of the field crossing the ditch.

New for 2020 the 6km Moke Lake Run uses the fantastic DOC loop trail around Moke Lake adjacent to Ben Lomond Station, it’s a great run and suitable for all ages, and entries are available on the day. On the day entries are also available for Half marathon is a challenging mix of farm road, water race, steep climbs, and single track. 

The 30km Adventure Run takes the most direct route from Skippers Canyon through the middle of Ben Lomond Station, with 1450m of elevation it’s no easy run. Entries are sold out with a record field of 173 runners

The feature event at the Shotover Moonlight is the Mountain Marathon which sold out in September and is set for a record field of over 260 runners to test their endurance, stamina and perseverance on what is recognised as one of the most challenging marathon courses in New Zealand. Over 2600m of elevation across the run, connecting main of the traditional mustering routes on the farm, and historic water races. 

An extremely strong men’s field is lining up in the Marathon with the pick of pre-race favourites being Scottie Hawker (NZ) 3rd place 2019 UTMB, 6th overall Ultra Trail World Tour 2019, Martin Gaffuri (France) 2nd Shotover Moonlight 2019, Sam Tosh (UK) 1st Luxmore Grunt 2019, Mathieu Blanchard (CAN) 2nd Tarawera Ultra 102km 2020 and Weston Hill (NZ),

  • Two competitors are returning for their 9th race, and one new ‘5’ year legend set to be recognised.
