I’ve thought of doing the Mt Difficulty Ascent since I first heard about it two years ago. The difficulty of the race and the way Terry described it on the website has made this event one I really needed to do and a perfect excuse to visit New Zealand for the first time.
This year I’ve changed my approach to training with my coach Steve Brennan. The focus has been on increasing my speed and my efficiency, even to the extent of sacrificing some hill work for track and speed sessions. It’s worked really well so far and I have seen the benefits instantly. Buffalo 20km two weeks ago really showed me how well it’s working.
That being said, to prepare for something so brutal (in a good way) as Mt Difficulty Ascent, I will need to do some incredibly steep hills in order to get used to them. So adding into my long runs some specific sessions of steep hill reps to be fully prepared for this race will be a focus.
Specificity is very important in training and I’m a big believer in it. It’ll be an exciting two months of training coming up for Mt Difficulty Ascent, I’m really looking forward to the challenge!!
